Privacy Policy
CiteClip reads only the tab you click. Citations never leave your device. There is no CiteClip server and no account.
What stays on your device
Saved references, projects, tags, style preference, and an optional Pro license key live in chrome.storage.local in this browser. Bibliography exports and JSON backups are files you download to your computer. They are never transmitted to SW Commercial.
What the extension can access
- The tab you click Cite on, only at that moment. Toolbar Cite or a right-click Cite item is the user gesture. The extension injects an extractor into that tab to read citation markup already on the page (JSON-LD, citation meta tags, or a heuristic scan). It does not run on every page, does not read other tabs, and has no host permissions.
- An open PDF in that tab. After you click Cite, the extension may read the PDF you already opened so it can recover title, authors, and DOI from the file. This is the document on screen, not a Crossref lookup.
- arXiv HTML of the same paper, only when the PDF has no title. Some arXiv TeX PDFs ship empty file metadata. In that case the extension may read arXiv's HTML copy of the paper you opened so the citation can include authors and title. It does not call Crossref, DataCite, PubMed, or other citation APIs.
- A cited link's URL and nearby listing text (Google Scholar / PubMed cards). The destination page is not fetched.
Optional Pro and tips
Optional Pro is a one-time license key you paste on the Options page. The key is verified on your device. It does not add tracking.
A tip link may open Buy Me a Coffee in a normal browser tab. That visit is between you and Buy Me a Coffee. The extension does not send your library.
Optional Pro checkout opens CiteClip Pro on Polar in a normal tab. Polar is the merchant of record. The extension does not call a Polar validate API.
What we do not do
- No analytics. No telemetry. No advertising SDKs.
- No collection, sale, or sharing of personal data.
- No remote code: all scripts ship inside the extension zip.
- No account, no cloud sync, no CiteClip backend.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
CiteClip handles website content only when you click Cite, and only to format and save a citation in chrome.storage.local on your device. That data is never sold, never used for ads or credit decisions, and never transferred off the device. The use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Permissions
Exactly four: storage, activeTab, contextMenus, scripting. No host permissions, no persistent content scripts.
Changes
If this ever changes, this page will be updated before any store update ships. The core promise will not: citations stay on your device.
